US Stocks Make Gains Tuesday

U.S. stock indexes rose in Tuesday's trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced four-tenths of a percent to close at 11,106. The S&P 500 gained nine-tenths of a percent to finish at 1,173 while the NASDAQ jumped 1.5 percent to hit 2,532.

European stocks closed higher. London's Financial Times index finished ahead nine-tenths of a percent to end at 5,174 . The CAC-40 in Paris ended up 1.4 percent to close at 2,895, while the DAX index in Frankfurt advanced 1.9 percent to finish the day's trading at 5,166.

Earlier, Tokyo's Nikkei index gained one percent to finish at 8,617. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was closed Tuesday.

The price of gold rose more than $21 to trade at $1,836.68 an ounce.

The dollar is trading down against both the yen and the euro.
