Pakistan is trying to contain an outbreak of dengue fever that has killed at least eight people in the last two months.

Officials said Wednesday that more than 4,400 cases of the mosquito-borne illness have been reported in the country's Punjab province. The provincial capital, Lahore, has been hit particularly hard by the flu-like disease.

Provincial authorities have closed schools in Punjab for 10 days to prevent the further spread of dengue fever. There is no vaccine or cure for the illness, whose symptoms include high fever, headache and muscle pain.

A team of experts from Sri Lanka is due to arrive in Pakistan in the coming days to help the government deal with the disease.

Pakistan is already coping with flooding that has killed more than 225 people in recent weeks.
