A United Nations advisor says Britain is breaking international law by evicting hundreds of people from an illegal travelers' camp in an area east of London.

Yves Cabannes, a member of the U.N. Advisory Group on Forced Evictions, said Wednesday moving the Irish Travellers from the site violates international human rights law, particularly the right to adequate housing and protection against discrimination.

Local authorities are planning to evict several hundred people living in unauthorized housing plots at their Dale Farm site in the county of Essex. Many travelers live at that location in homes erected without permission.

Authorities are set to begin eviction procedures on Monday.

The Irish Travellers are a nomadic people of Irish descent. They have a similar lifestyle to Roma , but are ethnically different.
