U.S.-based retail giant Wal-mart has announced plans to increase its outreach to women-owned businesses and female workers seeking job training, weeks after the Supreme Court threw out a gender discrimination lawsuit against the company.

Wal-mart officials said Wednesday that they will double the amount the company spends on women's businesses to $5 billion annually by 2016. They also said the company will double the amount it spends on merchandise from international suppliers run by women.

In addition, the retail chain said it plans to help train and educate 400,000 women internationally, including 200,000 low-income women in the United States. It also said it will provide training for 60,000 women working in factories that supply Wal-mart and other retailers.

As many as 1.6 million women joined a class action lawsuit accusing Wal-mart of favoring men in hiring and promotion. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the women in June, giving Wal-mart a legal victory.
