Rescue workers have pulled the body of a fourth miner out of a flooded mine in southern Wales, in one of the worst mining disasters in the region in years.

British Prime Minister David Cameron described the accident as “desperately sad.”

Three of the seven miners in the mine at the time managed to make it to safety.

Labor Party leader Ed Miliband sent his deepest condolences to the families of those who had died in what he called a “tragedy” for the tight-knit community.

The coal industry was once the economic backbone of Wales, but it has dwindled to only a few mines since the 1980s.
