Libya’s National Transition Council fighters met strong resistance in two of Moammar Gadhafi’s remaining strongholds Sunday, as NTC leaders worked to form a new government.

The NTC had planned to announce Cabinet positions at a press conference later Sunday, but the French news agency says last-minute negotiations have delayed the announcement.

Pro-Gadhafi forces in the desert town of Bani Walid fought NTC fighters with heavy mortar and sniper fire.  NTC fighters entering the town from the north answered back with machine gun fire.

Rockets also flew over NTC fighters advancing on Gadhafi loyalists in the former leader’s hometown, Sirte. Officials say recent fighting there has killed at least 10 and wounded at least 40 others.

Moussa Ibrahim, the deposed leader’s spokesman, says Gadhafi loyalists have the ability to continue the fight “for months.”

NTC fighters returned to the desert town of Bani Walid Saturday, after loyalists had forced them to retreat a day before.

Turkey has announced it is parachuting 22 tons of humanitarian aid into Bani Walid.  The government said Saturday the aid is for civilians who are in urgent need of help.
