A strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook northeastern India late Sunday and was felt over a broad area, including parts of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
The quake was centered in the Indian state of Sikkim, about 60 kilometers northwest of the regional capital, Gangtok. Witnesses say it damaged some buildings and sent residents into the streets. Electricity and phone lines were cut, making it difficult to communicate with the mountainous Indian region.
A reporter for VOA’s Bangla service says the quake also caused cracks in some buildings in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
