Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 2.76 percent , to end at 18,918.

Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Shanghai, Sydney, Wellington and Taipei. Manila stocks closed slightly higher.

The dollar was selling at 76.84 yen in currency trading, up slightly from late Friday.
