German police evacuated a university in Berlin where Turkish President Abdullah Gul was to give a speech after being notified of a bomb threat.

Mr. Gul was scheduled to speak about Turkish-German relations on Monday at Humboldt University, but police cancelled the speech and asked people to leave the venue.

German news reports say a bomb threat was the reason for the sudden evacuation, and the area was searched for explosives.

The Associated Press reports Mr. Gul met earlier in the day with German President Christian Wulff and told him that Turkey can make a major contribution to Europe.

Turkey is hoping to join the European Union, but questions remain about its qualifications. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has come out in favor of granting Turkey “privileged partnership” rather than full membership.
