September 20, 2011 – A suicide bomber detonates explosives hidden in his turban, killing former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was spearheading peace efforts with the Taliban. The blast at his Kabul home also kills four other people and wounds Masoom Stanekzai, one of President Hamid Karzai's key advisors.

September 13-14, 2011 – Taliban insurgents stage a 20-hour siege of Kabul, attacking NATO's headquarters, the U.S. Embassy, the Afghan Intelligence Agency and other targets near Kabul's diplomatic district. Eleven Afghan civilians and five Afghan police officers are killed.

August 19, 2011 – Suicide bombers storm Britain's cultural center in the Afghan capital, triggering hours of fighting that killed nine people, including a NATO soldier.

July 17, 2011 – Jan Mohammad Khan, a former governor of southern Uruzgan province and a close adviser to President Hamid Karzai, is killed along with Uruzgan lawmaker Mohammad Ashim Watanwal by two men wearing suicide vests.

June 28, 2011 – At least six suicide bombers storm Kabul's luxury Intercontinental Hotel, killing at least 10 Afghan civilians. The attack takes place on the eve of a conference about the gradual transition of civil and military responsibility from foreign forces to Afghans.

June 18, 2011 – Insurgents wearing Afghan uniforms storm a police station in the capital, killing nine people.

May 21, 2011 – A Taliban suicide bomber kills six medical students inside the main military hospital in Kabul.

April 27, 2011 – An Afghan military pilot opens fire on NATO troops inside an Afghan air force meeting room at the Kabul airport, killing eight U.S. soldiers and an American contractor.

April 18, 2011 – A man wearing an Afghan army uniform opens fire inside the Afghan Defense Ministry in Kabul, killing two soldiers.

February 14, 2011 – The Taliban claims responsibility for a suicide attack at the Kabul City Center shopping mall popular with foreigners, killing two security guards.

January 28, 2011 – A suicide bomber kills eight people at a central Kabul supermarket popular with Westerners.

January 12, 2011 – A suicide bomber on a motorbike kills at least two people and wounds 30 others near a minibus carrying Afghan intelligence personnel in Kabul.
