Japanese markets closed lower Tuesday, while the U.S. dollar is trading slightly lower against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost well over one and one-half percent to finish at 8,721.

The dollar was selling at 76.55 yen, a loss of a fraction of a yen from Monday.

Gold is trading at $1790.64 an ounce.
