Japanese markets closed higher Wednesday, while the U.S. dollar is trading lower against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained nearly one-quarter of one percent to finish at 8,741.

The dollar was selling at 76.36 yen, a loss of one-tenth of a yen from Tuesday.

Gold is trading at $1,809.25 an ounce.
