The Atlantic hurricane season has its 15th named storm of 2011. Tropical storm Ophelia has developed more than 2500 kilometers east of the Leeward Islands.

U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasters say Ophelia has maximum sustained winds of 65 km per hour and is moving westward at 15 km per hour.

Forecasters expect the tropical storm to strengthen over the next 48-hours as it approaches the Leeward Islands Friday.

Because Ophelia is over the open Atlantic Ocean there are currently no coastal watches or warnings.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st and ends November 30th.
