Japanese markets were closed Friday for a national holiday .

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 1.32 percent , to end at 17,675.

Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Taipei, Sydney, Manila, Shanghai and Wellington.

The dollar was selling at 76.27 yen in currency trading, up slightly from late Thursday.
