Heavy rains have killed nearly 50 people and displaced hundreds of thousands in northern and eastern India.

Those stranded took shelter atop trees, hills and rooftops in the eastern states of Orissa and Bihar and the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Rescue helicopters dropped food in hard-to-reach areas.

The floods have been caused by heavy and late rains at the end of the monsoon season.
