Top U.S. diplomats have met with Burma's foreign minister at the United Nations, holding what the United States describes as a productive and open meeting.
The State Department said Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and the new U.S. coordinator for Burma policy, Derek Mitchell, welcomed recent positive steps that Burma's nominally civilian government has taken, including its dialogue with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
But the diplomats told Burmese Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin Monday that the United States wants to see Burma having more meaningful discussion with the opposition leader.
They also said the United States wants concrete steps from Burma's government to signify its commitment to reform, including releasing all political prisoners, ending violence in ethnic areas, and being transparent in its relationship with North Korea.
