U.S. stock indexes advanced in midday trading Monday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 1.4 percent, while the S&P 500 is ahead nine-tenths of one percent. The NASDAQ is fractionally ahead from Friday's close.
European stock markets closed higher.
London's Financial Times 100 index ended up one-half of one percent at 5,089. The CAC-40 in Paris advanced 1.8 percent to end at 2,859. The DAX in Frankfurt finished up 2.9 percent at 5,346.
In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped 2.2 percent , to close at 8,374.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.5 percent , to end at 17,408.
Gold is trading down $45.06 at $1,611.68 an ounce.
The U.S. dollar was lower against the yen, but up against the euro.
