Direct descendents of Confucius participated in ceremonies in Beijing Wednesday marking the anniversary of the philosopher's birth.
Scholars and officials also took part in the ceremony, with many dressed in traditional costumes from Confucius' time more than 2,500 years ago. The ceremony at a 700-year-old temple included ritual offerings and readings from Confucian texts.
Among those present was Kong Weizhong, a direct descendant of Confucius.
He said he and the other descendents were proud to be part of the occasion, which comes 2,561 years after what is believed to be the date of the philosopher's birth.
A similar ceremony was staged in Taiwan, where celebrants marked the occasion with drum rolls and a procession of attendants, musicians and dancers.
Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and other politicians also took part.
Followers of Confucius say similar ceremonies have been held every year since Confucius died in 479 BC.
