A major protected witness in a Kosovo war crimes trial has been found dead in a park in Germany.

German police say there are all indications that Agim Zogaj hanged himself, but say the investigation and autopsy are underway.

Zogaj was a protected witness for the prosecution in the war crimes trial against ethnic-Albanian rebel leader turned politician Fatmir Limaj.

European Union law enforcement officials have charged Limaj with killing and torturing Serb prisoners during Kosovo's war for independence against Serbia in the late 1990s.

The U.N. war crimes tribunal in the Hague acquitted Limaj of similar charges in 2005.
