Pakistan has denied that the country's spy agency, the Inter-services Intelligence (ISI), was involved in last month's assassination of Afghanistan's envoy to the Taliban peace talks.

Burhanuddin Rabbani was killed by a suicide bomber on September 20 at his home in Kabul, the Afghan capital.

A statement issued Sunday by Pakistan's Foreign Ministry called the allegation “baseless and irresponsible.” Earlier, authorities questioned evidence provided to the Pakistan embassy in Kabul that the assassin was a Pakistani national and came from a border town near the Pakistani city of Quetta.

Pakistan has described Rabbani as a great friend and condemned the assassination.
