Prices Plunge on Asian Markets, Dollar Dips

Major Asian stock markets closed sharply lower Monday.

Tokyo’s Nikkei index lost one and three-quarters percent to finish at 8,545.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index lost more than 4 percent after being closed Friday due to a typhoon, and closed at 16,822.

Share prices also were lower in Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Mumbai, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Wellington. Seoul was marginally higher.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.91 yen, down slightly from Friday.

Gold is trading at $1,656.35 an ounce.
