U.S. forces in South Korea say they are turning over a soldier suspected of raping a young South Korean woman to local authorities.
The 2nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army released a statement Tuesday saying it will transfer custody of the soldier on Thursday, in accordance to the Status of Forces agreement between the U.S. and South Korea.
Yonhap news agency says the 21-year old Army private, whose name was not released, confessed to raping an 18-year-old woman on September 24 in the town of Dongducheon near Seoul.
U.S. Major General Edward Cardon expressed his “sincere regret” to the victim, her family and the Korean people.
