Japanese markets closed lower Wednesday, while the U.S. dollar is lower against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index fell nearly one percent to finish at 8,383.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.70 yen, a loss of just over one-tenth of a yen from Tuesday.

Gold is trading at $1,604.88 an ounce.
