The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman for “their nonviolent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee made the announcement Friday in Oslo, saying “we cannot achieve lasting peace in the world unless women obtain the same opportunities in the world as men.”
