Chinese officials have ordered the American retailing giant Wal-Mart to close at least 10 stores where tons of falsely labeled pork were sold.

The official Xinhua news agency said the stores sold more than 63,000 kilograms of ordinary pork that was falsely labeled as organic. All the stores are located in the huge western city of Chongqing.

Huang Bo, the director of the local commerce department, said the company’s actions violated Chinese law.

Chinese media said the company has been fined more than $400,000 and some of its employees have been detained.

Local officials told Xinhua they have punished Wal-Mart 21 times since the company entered Chongqing in 2006. They said the company has been sanctioned for exaggerated advertising and for selling expired and substandard food.
