US Stocks Advance in Early Monday Trading

U.S. and European stock indexes advanced sharply in Monday trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 2.5 percent, while the S&P 500 index is ahead 2.9 percent. The NASDAQ is up more than 3 percent.

European stock markets closed higher.

London's Financial Times 100 index ended up 1.8 percent to finish at 5,399. The CAC-40 in Paris advanced 2.1 percent to close at 3,161. The DAX in Frankfurt finished ahead 3 percent , at 5,847.

In Asia, Tokyo markets were closed Monday for a national holiday .

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index ended up slightly to finish at 17,711.

Gold was trading up $33.05 at $1,670.90 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar was trading down against both the yen and euro.
