US Stocks Advance Sharply in Monday Trading

U.S. and European stock indexes advanced sharply in Monday trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up nearly 3 percent to close at 11,433. The broader S&P 500 index was up almost 3.5 percent at 1,195, and the NASDAQ was up 3.5 percent to end at 2,566.

European stock markets closed higher.

London's Financial Times 100 index ended up 1.8 percent to finish at 5,399. The CAC 40 in Paris advanced 2.1 percent to close at 3,161. The DAX in Frankfurt finished ahead 3 percent , at 5,847.

In Asia, Tokyo markets were closed Monday for a national holiday . Hong Kong's Hang Seng index ended up slightly to finish at 17,711.

Gold was trading up $37.22 at $1,675.07 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar was trading down against both the yen and euro.
