Prices on major U.S. stock indexes closed mixed Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 17 points to close at 1,416. The S&P 500 was up less than a point to 1,196 and the NASDAQ rose 17 points to 2,583.

European stocks also closed mixed.

The Financial Times index in London fell 3 points to close at 5,396. The CAC 40 in Paris dropped 8 points to finish at 3,154 and Frankfurt's DAX index rose 18 points to end at 5,865.

In Asia Tuesday, Tokyo's Nikkei index gained 168 points — nearly 2 percent — to finish at 8,774. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index soared 431 points — nearly 2.5 percent — to finish the day's trading at 18,142.

The price of gold fell $9.90 to $1,659.70 an ounce.

The dollar was trading lower against the euro and the yen.
