Former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic, on trial for war crimes in The Hague, has been hospitalized with what doctors suspect is pneumonia.

His lawyer made the announcement Tuesday.

Mladic is on trial for genocide and war crimes in the 1992-to-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He has been accused of crimes against humanity, including planning the death of 8,000 Muslim men and boys over a six-day period in 1995.

Authorities located Mladic in May and extradited him to the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague after 16 years on the run.

A spokeswoman for the tribunal says Mladic was transferred to their custody with a series of pre-existing health conditions.
