US Stocks Slide in Early Thursday Trading

U.S. stock indexes fell in early trading Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down nine-tenths of a percent, while the S&P 500 index is off 1.1 percent. The NASDAQ index is down four-tenths of a percent.

European stock prices are also lower in afternoon trading.

London's Financial Times index is off one percent, with the CAC-40 in Paris down 1.2 percent. The DAX index in Frankfurt is 1.3 percent lower.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index gained one percent to finish at 8,823.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 2.3 percent to finish the day's trading at 18,758.

Gold is trading down $19.58 at $1,656.72 an ounce.

The dollar is trading up against the euro, but down against the yen.
