Germany's president is in Afghanistan for previously unannounced talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Christian Wulff arrived in the capital, Kabul, Sunday.
He said Germany would remain a “friend and partner” of Afghanistan after the withdrawal of international troops planned for 2014.
President Wulff is scheduled to meet with President Karzai to prepare for a conference on Afghanistan in Bonn in December.
The German president is also set to meet with Afghan human rights groups.
Germany has approximately 5,000 troops taking part in international efforts in Afghanistan.
Mr. Wulff's visit is the first visit to Afghanistan by a German president in 44 years.
