European Markets Up at Midday

U.S. stocks fell in early trading Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ composite index are both down six-tenths of one percent, while the S&P 500 index is off seven-tenths of a percent.

European stocks are lower in afternoon trading.

London's Financial Times 100 index is off two-tenths of one percent. The CAC-40 in Paris is down one-half of one percent. The DAX in Frankfurt is off one percent.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.5 percent to close at 8,880.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 2 percent to end at 18,874.

Gold is trading up $2.88 at $1,683.82 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar is trading up against the euro but down against the yen.
