Britain says a United Nations resolution calling for a global truce for the 2012 London Summer games has the largest number of co-sponsors in U.N. history.

All 193 U.N. members have signed on to the resolution. British Foreign Office undersecretary Harry Bellingham calls it an astonishing level of agreement which shows that long-term peace and stability and preventing conflict are possible

The truce calls on all nations to lay down their arms starting with the summer games on July 27th 2012 and lasting through the Paraolympic games for physically disabled athletes on September 9th.

Former British Olympic track champion and head of the London organizing committee, Sebastian Coe, submitted the resolution on Britain's behalf.

He said while sports cannot be an answer to all the world's problems, they can mend broken communities, rebuild trust, and foster the values, he says, are at the core of humanity.

The idea of an Olympic truce dates back to ancient Greece, when all wars were suspended to let the athletes safely travel and compete in the games.
