US Stocks Slide in Midday Trading Monday

U.S. stocks fell in midday trading Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 1.5 percent. The S&P 500 is off 1.3 percent, while the NASDAQ composite index is down 1.6 percent.

European stocks closed lower.

London's Financial Times 100 index slid one-half of one percent to finish at 5,437. The CAC-40 in Paris ended down 1.6 percent to close at 3,166. The DAX in Frankfurt finished off 1.8 percent to close at 5,859.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.5 percent to close at 8,880.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 2 percent to end at 18,874.

Gold is trading down $12.74 at $1,668.21 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar is trading up against the euro but down against the yen.
