France's First Lady Carla Bruni has given birth to a baby girl — the first baby ever born to a sitting French president and his wife.

Reports say the baby arrived Wednesday night at the La Muette clinic in Paris and that everything went well.

President Nicolas Sarkozy was said to have come back to Paris from economic talks in Frankfurt. The French presidential palace has not confirmed the birth, saying it respects the Sarkozys' privacy.

This is the first child born to Mr. Sarkozy and the 43 year-old Bruni, an Italian-born former singer and model.

She already has a 10 year-old son from a previous relationship and he has three sons from two earlier marriages.
