Asian stock markets were higher in trading Monday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.9 percent to close at 8,844.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 4.13 percent to end at 18,771.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Shanghai, Sydney, Taipei and Manila. Wellington markets were closed for a national holiday .

The dollar was selling at 76.26 yen in currency trading, down slightly from late Friday.
