Serbian President Boris Tadic is calling on Serbia and Kosovo to resume talks as soon as possible, saying tense relations between the two are a global problem and not just one for Serbs and Albanians.

The Serbian News Agency Monday quotes Mr. Tadic as saying no results can be achieved, problems solved, and vital national interests protected without negotiations with Kosovo.

He added that he does not want to pass on the Kosovo problem to another generation.

Serbia has said it will never recognize Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia. But Belgrade says it is determined to resolve other differences through negotiations.

Meanwhile, no progress was reached in talks Sunday between Mr. Tadic and Serbian representatives of municipalities in Northern Kosovo on resolving a border crossing dispute with Kosovo.

But all sides did agree that the best way to a solution is avoiding violence and extremism.

Serbs, who refuse to recognize Kosovo government authorities, have barricaded the crossing between Serbia and Kosovo, refusing to let NATO peacekeepers pass.
