US Stocks Make Gains

U.S. stocks made gains in Monday's early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose half a percent, the S&P 500 gained eight-tenths of a percent and the NASDAQ moved up 1.2 percent.

European stock markets were higher in Monday's afternoon trading. London's Financial Times 100 index advanced half a percent, the CAC-40 in Paris gained four-tenths of a percent, while the DAX in Frankfurt rose three-thirds of a percent

Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 1.9 percent to close at 8,844. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 4.1 percent to end at 18,772.

The price of gold rose more than $13 to trade at $1,655.02 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar was down against the yen but gained value compared to the euro.
