Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir say suspected militants have hurled a grenade at a police vehicle, wounding five civilians when the grenade missed its target.

The attack Wednesday in Bijbehara comes a day after several similar attacks directed at security forces in Kashmir's main city of Srinagar. Those attacks wounded three paramilitary officers.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed in full by both.

Muslim separatists have been fighting for the Himalayan region's independence from Hindu-majority India or a merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the insurgency.
