Japanese share prices closed higher Wednesday, and the dollar was lower against the yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained just over one-tenth of a percent to close at 8,772.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 75.92 yen, down a sixth of a yen from late Tuesday.

Gold was trading at $1,714.50.
