Japanese markets closed closed higher Thursday, while the U.S. dollar is trading lower against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained just over two percent to finish at 8,927.

The dollar was selling at 75.83 yen, a loss of more than one-quarter of a yen from Wednesday.

Gold is trading at $1,711.13 an ounce.
