Ugandan police have detained a top opposition leader for the second time this month, as he tried to lead protests over rising food and fuel costs.
Authorities arrested Kizza Besigye Monday near his home outside the capital, Kampala, as he led about 20 supporters in a so-called “walk to work” demonstration.
Besigye has been arrested several times during similar protests, including being briefly detained two weeks ago.
The government has warned against such demonstrations, and authorities used force to stop protests in April and May.
Opposition groups have blamed the policies of President Yoweri Museveni for rising food and fuel costs. Mr. Museveni has blamed skyrocketing prices on drought and the global oil market.
