French police say fire has gutted a satirical newspaper's Paris offices.

The Charlie Hebdo newspaper this week published a special Arab Spring edition that featured a cartoon image of the Prophet Mohammed on its cover.

His depiction is prohibited in Islam.

Police cite witnesses as seeing Molotov cocktails being thrown at the building. An investigation into the incident continues. No injuries were reported.

The newspaper's editor says damages to the offices were extensive.
