Nepalese officials say heavy fog has prevented flights in and out of the Mount Everest region, stranding more than 1,200 tourists for several days.

The Associated Press reports stranded tourists have pitched tents in and around Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla.

The French news agency says local hotels are booked to capacity and are running out of food.

Thousands of tourists visit Nepal's Everest region each year. Nepal is home to eight of the world's 10 highest peaks, including the tallest – Mount Everest at almost 9,000 meters.
