The Red Cross says at least 63 people have died in a wave of violence in northeast Nigeria after a series of bombings and shootings around the city of Damaturu.

Armed gunmen rampaged through the town in Yobe state Friday night, bombing police stations, a bank, and several churches. Gunfire rang out through the night, and in the morning.

Witnesses say the gunmen also attacked the nearby village of Potiskum, leaving two dead.

Islamist sect Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attacks, as well as multiple bombings in the nearby city of Maiduguri earlier in the day. The death toll from that attack is still unclear.

Government officials have not released a statement on the incidents.

The attacks come two days before the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, or the feast of sacrifice.

Boko Haram wants to establish strict Islamic state in northern Nigeria.
