New census estimates show the number of Americans living in poverty has risen to almost 50 million — 16 percent of the U.S. population.

That’s up from 46.2 million people reported in September.

The new figure of 49.1 million takes into account higher prices for everyday costs and medical expenses.

The number of Hispanics living in poverty in the United States has now surpassed the number of poor blacks.
