Sources in Burma say 10 people, some of them children, have been killed in a bomb blast in the capital of northern Kachin state.

The sources, who spoke on condition they not be identified, said Monday the explosion late Sunday set fire to three houses and injured at least 23 people in the city of Myitkyinar. Many of those living in the homes were orphans.

There was no immediate indication of who planted the bomb or why. However the state-controlled New Light of Myanmar newspaper said two other bombs exploded harmlessly in the same city on Saturday.

Government forces are engaged in military operations against an ethnic rebel force in Kachin state.
