The German government is reportedly taking a fresh look at a decades-long killing spree that targeted immigrants, most of them of Turkish origin.

It has been alleged that the killing of nine shopkeepers, all but one of them with Turkish roots, has links to Germany's far-right neo-Nazi party, the NPD. The other victim was of Greek origin. A policewoman was also shot dead in the series of killings that began in 2000 and ended in 2007.

German Chancellor Angel Merkel has labeled the killings right-wing terror and a “shame for Germany.” She said Monday a concerted effort will be made to track down those responsible, along with a fresh attempt to outlaw the NPD. Earlier efforts failed on legal grounds.

About three million people of Turkish origin live in Germany.
