Thousands of Egyptians are demonstrating in Cairo's Tahrir Square, upset over what they say is an attempt by the country's military to reinforce its powers.

Friday's rally was called by the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's most organized political group, in reaction to a government proposal to give the military the final say on major policies

The protesters and other political parties are also demanding a clear timetable for the military to hand over power to a civilian government.

Egyptians are scheduled to go to the polls later this month for the start of elections to choose a new parliament. The vote is the first since a popular uprising ousted long-time Egyptian ruler Hosni Mubarak from power.
