Pakistani mediators and a senior Pakistani Taliban commander say the government has held exploratory peace talks with the militant group.

They say the discussions have focused on the South Waziristan tribal region – the country's main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups on the Afghan border. Prisoner exchanges have also been discussed.

The commander and the mediators spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.
